I'm looking to buy 1/43 road vehicles circa 1935-1951 for my 7mm railway layout set in the North East of England in the mid 1940's

I'm particularly interested in common commercial vehicles - lorries, delivery vans etc though everything in the scale and period would be considered including road rollers, agricultural vehicles etc. Also interested in private cars (not the Rollers & Daimlers but the cheaper end of vehicle suitable for a NE fishing port in the 1940's). Also ex- Army lorries.

Any condition considered including scrapbox items for renovation.

There seems to be plenty of post 50s stuff on ebay, but wartime era stuff, there doesnt seem to be much. Saw a couple of white metal kits of Orstin 7s. Puzzled as to why there isnt a mainstream 1/43 diecast of this, as there were loads about everywhere

Not sure any new civilian cars were built in the '40s. Mainly 1930s designs car carried on after the war until the early '50s when some new cars started to appear.

Thinking about it, probably your best bet to start with is the Vanguards Ford Popular. They started building them just post war and carried on into the early '50s. I have one and it's a nice little model. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Thanks Kris - that's interesting. I only associate the Pop with the 50's but bow to your much greater knowledge.
I'm not a railway purist so a few years either side of credible works for me anyway.

You can just get away with the Corgi Ford Pop, and equivalent van. These are in pretty plentiful supply on ebay and occasionally turn up at toyfairs. Also there are quite a few models of the morris Z van about and that ran from 1940-1953..

Should have said the book gives the Pop as 39-53. I keep looking at the Z but haven't found a useful livery yet.

Post Office..Plenty of them knocking about, plus there is the Austin/Morris J van, of which Corgi have done loads of versions. Re liverying, and new transfers is often easy too. To remove the 'tampo print' on diecasts, I recommend using nail varnish remover & a cotton bud. Pour some into the lid of the NVR, dip the cotton bud in, and gently rub. Don't rub too hard though because too much pressure can remove the paint. remove excess NVR with a piece of soft tissue such as loo roll. And bobs your uncle, a plain coloured van

Forgot about the PO one Rubber front wings so I am told. Must order one up. I do, however, have a few J vans and they are a bit of a favourite. I also went through a phase of collecting original workshop manuals and got one for the J (and the K8 for that matter). Nice to see how they go together and so much simpler than today's vehicles.

What about one of these? Strip off the Michelin hoardings as they are only plastic, a bit of good old NVR and bingo...1/43 scale Morris Cowley van in plain black..

There are a few Model T variants, mainly plastic or white metal, available in the railway hobby sector. Personally I wouldn't use them past about 1930.

I ought to also have said I'm also interested in buses - single-deckers - also dustcarts and allied items - basically anything that might credibly have appeared at a run-down austerity-hit backwater terminus on the North East coast just after the war.
Lots of make-do-and-mend applied during the period so creative kitbashing always possible.

Nice collection. I don't know how prototypical you want to be but I am not sure the Outspan livery is correct on this age of vehicle. Might be worth looking it up before making a purchase. I posted the Ransomes lawnmower service version if you want a look at the model.

Seeing the greater availability of 1950's vehicles I am seriously contemplating shifting my 'period of model' to that of rationing which would work up to 1953.

Nothing much would have changed up there except the 1948 Briti8sh Railways grouping - and I guess the right logos and branding would have taken a good many years to reach Seahouses, especially in the Austerity Era.

I must go checkout your Ransomes - there's a name that brings back memories of years spent in God's country.

Shame there arent any decent diecast outlets round here. You are ok if you want model railways & radio controlled, but all we have here is a poor tiny Modelzone!

Yeh but look how close you are to London - a lot closer than those in the West country

Browsing through the latest issue of Diecast Collector, I came across a range of O gauge fire engines, some of which are British outline. They are a 1934 open cab Leyland FK1, and a 1938 closed cab Dennis light Four. They retail at £17.99.
